How to Sign Up
West Islip Public Library is happy to provide community service opportunities to West Islip’s teens in grades 7 – 12.
Most service opportunities require registration and you must be a W.I. teen resident to register, unless otherwise noted.
There are 3 ways to register:

January Service Opportunities
Registration for the following service opportunities began on January 3rd at 10:00am.
Electronics are a popular gift for the holidays, but not everyone knows how to work them! Get 2 hours of community service for helping adults learn the ins and outs of their new devices!
Valentine’s Day Cards for Hospitalized Patients
Join us at the Library to make Valentine’s cards for those who need a little boost! Receive 1 hour of community service. Please email the Teen librarian to register.
Join librarian Michaela and pitch new ideas for what you want to see at the library this coming year. Snacks will be provided. Teens will receive 1 hour of community service for attending.
Are you good at Lego building? Do you need community service hours? Get 1 hour of community service for helping children put together Lego sets. Please sign up for only one time slot.
February Service Opportunities
Registration for the following service opportunities begins on February 1st at 10:00am.
Celebrate P.S. I Love You Day! Starting Thursday, February 1st, teens in grades 7-12 can pick up their Kindness Bingo card at the Reference desk. Get Bingo by marking off the acts of kindness you complete in the month of February! Bingo can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Return your finished Bingo card to the Reference desk by Thursday, February 29th and receive 2 hours of community service. Registration is not required.
Teens will decorate canvas bags and add some much needed items for first responders at Stony Brook University. 1 hour of community service will be awarded.
Ongoing Service Opportunities

Check out one of our new books in the teen section, read it, and write a minimum 500-word review on whether or not you would recommend this title to another person. Before you read and write your review, email the Teen librarian with the title and author for approval of your book choice. Once your choice has been approved, email your completed review to the librarian. Earn 2 hours of community service after your review has been approved. You may complete 1 review per month. For W.I. Library cardholders only.
Earn 2 hours of community service by completing a movie review from one of our two streaming services, Hoopla or Kanopy. Watch a film from the 20th Century rated G, PG, or PG-13 and fill out our online form to complete the review. After we examine and approve your review, we will notify you regarding your certificate. You may complete 1 review per month. Please email the Teen librarian for more details. For W.I. Library cardholders only.
Outside Service Opportunities
Virtual Tutoring Program: Volunteer tutors get to choose grade level and subject. Orientation and materials provided. Contact Ilyse Kantor at 631-585-1811 if interested.
PetSmart North & West Babylon Adoption Center need volunteers for morning, afternoon and evening shifts 7 days a week. We ask that volunteers take one weekly 2 hour shift. Applicants must be 18 years of age or 14 years of age accompanied with a parent/guardian 18 years of age or older. If interested, please complete volunteer application at www.tenderlovingcats.org
